Dóra Jóhannsdóttir (Dóra Jó)
is an Icelandic writer, director, producer, actor, improviser and speaker.

 

She is the creator and co-writer of the television series Húsó (The School of Housewives), written under the pseudonym Hekla Hólm. The series won the Icelandic Television Awards for Best Scripted TV Series and Best Script in 2024 and was nominated for the Nordic Series Script Award in 2025.

Dóra has acted in numerous theatre, film, and television productions.


She holds a BFA in Acting from the Iceland University of the Arts and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Iceland. She studied improv and sketch writing at Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) in New York and The Second City in Chicago.

 

Dóra is the founder of Improv Iceland (est. 2015) Iceland​​´s first improv theatre company.​ ​​

She was a co-writer on the TV series "Stella Blómkvist 2," nominated for the Edda awards (The Icelandic Film Academy Awards).

She served as head writer of Iceland’s most-watched television programme Áramótaskaupið in 2017 and 2019 and directed the show in 2022. The programme won the Edda Award for Best Comedy TV Show in all three years.


In 2025, Dóra published the autoethnographic book Outcast from the School of Housewives: Behind the Scenes of the Icelandic Film Industry. The book is currently available in Icelandic under the title Úr húsmæðraskóla í útlegð: Bak við tjöldin í íslenska kvikmyndabransanum.

 

Dóra has delivered over 100 lectures and workshops on creativity, wellbeing, and the principles of improv in life and work.

 

In 2023, Dóra founded the production company and publishing imprint Djók Productions.
